Marilyn's Life From East to West

California Life Thus Far

Hello everyone!  Sorry it has been such a long time since my last post.  I have actually been pretty busy which has been great!  Although finding a job in the PR/Communications field has been slow to say the least, I have found a “job” in the meantime that is in the field that I hope to be in one day: a background performer.

I signed up with a background casting agency in LA called central casting.  They basically do most of the background work for the TV shows and movies that you see; basically they cast people to fill the streets and football stands in the entertainment industry.  So far, I have really enjoyed it because I have met a lot of great people my age and seen a lot of behind the scenes work with some of my favorite shows.

I started off doing some work on 90210 which was really fun and I even saw myself a couple of times on “The Bachelors” episode that was shown on Monday October 4th.  After that I worked on CSI: Miami as an office worker.  That was one of my favorites since I watch it frequently.  Another reason it was so great is because I saw the entire cast and it was filmed on the actual set, which surprisingly looks really real and high tech even on set.  I even got to stand next to David Caruso (Horatio) during a few of the shots.  I have also worked on Desperate Housewives, Castle, Chuck, Mr. Sunshine, The Undercovers, Lie to Me, and Friday, CSI: NY.

Desperate Housewives was awesome because it is my #1 favorite show.  Bree was the only housewife I saw, but one of my favorites, so it was great to see her; she is even more beautiful in person than on TV.  The only thing that could have made it better would have been to be on Wisteria Lane rather than on location, which was in a park in Burbank.

The weather continues to be fabulous in California!  The past 3 days have been rainy, but I can’t complain since it is the first time that I have seen rain in 2 months.  It is great to be so close to the ocean, especially being close to the dog beach in Huntington Beach.  Riley loves going there, but is very afraid of the water go figure.

I am also interning at the SAG Foundation in Beverly Hills and it has been a great experience.  They do non-profit work with various people in the entertainment industry and love what they do.  I have assisted with their Internet and social media the most.  I hope to soon go to some of their Q&A sessions with well-known people in the industry.

So far that is about it!  I wish I could upload some photos, but you are not supposed to take pictures on the sets.  Maybe soon I won’t be such a wimp and sneak a few.  Love you all!

Here is one from 90210

And I’m in the preview

First Few Days in “The Golden State

The road trip out to California was grueling at times, but over all enjoyable.  I never thought I would see so much different scenery in 9 states.  The drive went through: Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and finally… California!  New Mexico was one of my favorite states to drive through, possibly because it was the last state of our 16-hour car trip on the second day and we were just excited to be done.  Really, it was just a beautiful place and unlike any area I am used to driving.

New Mexico view from the hotel
Arizona was another favorite!  We visited the Grand Canyon and it was somehow a million times bigger than I expected.  Definitely a sight to see!

And then what seemed like 15 years later, we made it to California!!!
The apartment is so great!  It is in a great location in Newport Beach in Orange County.  We are near Fashion Island (which I can’t wait to spend $$ at whenever I have it) and a bunch of trendy place.  We are right across the street from a little market, Kean Coffee (which is supposedly really big here, and we can bring Riley), and some cute restaurants.  The downside is that gas is super expensive, however it change from 10-20 cents less than a mile down the road (weird!).  The weather is AWESOME.  Since I have been here it has been sunny pretty much all day.  The weather is usually in the 70’s during the day and even a little chilly at night.
This guy we met at Kean Coffee tonight told us about this amazing place 1/2 mile away from the apartment to watch the sunrise- he said it is breathtaking, so we might check that out tomorrow.
Going to update pictures soon!
Lots of Love 🙂

Road Trip to the West Coast: Day 1

Today was Day 1… 8 hours down… 24 more to go!  We went through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and finally Conway, Arkansas (our first real pit stop thanks to Triple A).

It was actually pretty cool to get to see all of the “Welcome to ?” signs and I would have taken pictures, but unfortunately we were driving separately.  Arkansas is the only state that I have never driven through before and I had pretty low expectations but it is actually a beautiful area just from the highway.  Overall it was a pretty long/low-key day.  Will update more tomorrow on our 12 hour drive to Albuquerque, New Mexico!

Note to any travelers:  Always follow directions from your provider; don’t try to outsmart them, which is what we (Carter) did today and we were putzing around the wrong side of Birmingham for a while  🙂
